What each category requires.
Regular Member (RM)
A minimum of two years of research experience, or equivalent.
Affiliated Member (AM)
A minimum of three years of research experience, or equivalent. An undergraduate degree in a medical-sciences-related field is preferred, or equivalent experience extending to biomedical sciences.
Senior Committee (SC)
A doctoral degree, medical or research (e.g. MD or PhD), and at least five years of research experience.
Verifying who you are.
Every application is reviewed individually, and identity verification is part of that process. When you apply, you will be asked to provide a passport or another English-language government-issued identification document, used solely to confirm who you are. An ORCID iD is required of every applicant, to verify a consistent scholarly record.
Once an application is approved, CISBM issues a permanent member identification number: a reference for correspondence and, eventually, for member account access.
How member IDs work.
Every approved member receives a permanent, sequential 7-digit member number, starting from 0000000. This number is assigned once and never reused or changed, even if a member's status later changes.
Alongside it, each member holds a status code reflecting their current standing. Applicants are approved into one of three categories: RM (Regular Member), AM (Affiliated Member), or SC (Senior Committee). Members holding an organizational leadership role carry a designation specific to that role instead, such as DG (Director General), DEPD (Deputy Director), HD (Head of Division), HEADRES (Head of Research), or HEADHR (Head of Human Resources). The full member ID combines the status code, the two-digit year that status was assigned, and the permanent number, in the form CISBM-[year]-[status]-[number]. For example, CISBM-26-AM-0000001 identifies member 0000001, whose status as of 2026 is Affiliated Member.
A member's status can change as their role evolves, but at most once per calendar year, and only prospectively; a status update cannot be back-dated to an earlier year. The permanent member number never changes.
